Biopolymers and packaging area

The Biopolymers and Packaging area focuses on sustainable extraction/production and characterisation of biopolymers and in the continuous searching for novel renewable materials with enhanced properties suitable for a broad range of industrial applications, from packing to medical. Microbial production from renewable low cost substrates of different bio-based biodegradable polymers, namely bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS), yeast chitin-glucan complexes and polyhydroaxyalkanoates (PHA) are used to develop sustainable cost-effective biopolymer production processes for a wide range of polymer applications.
