Postdoc position within the IMI-EU consortium PREDECT IBET, Oeiras, Portugal & Abbvie, Chicago, USA

PREDECT is a unique European IMI‐funded partnership between academic and industrial partners, aiming to develop novel, advanced, complex in vitro and in vivo models for breast, prostate and lung cancers that represent, with better fidelity, the complexity of a human tumor in situ and should lead to greater predictivity of clinical efficacy. Within this project there is a unique opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to work at a cutting‐edge public private interphase.

Job description:

Within PREDECT, the current project focus on the development and evaluation of improved in vitro / ex vivo models for lung cancer research. For intensive target validation studies, it is essential to develop robust and reproducible processes culture systems for routine production and supply of complex cell models. Therefore, in a direct collaboration between AbbVie and iBET, together with other consortium partners, this research project addresses the "industrialization” of complex cell models for target validation and drug discovery. Complex models, such as 3‐dimensional (3D) cultures of tumor cells together with stromal cell components, will be generated making use of bioreactor technology. This will be accompanied by a molecular pathology program where the proteomic and transcriptomic signatures of these models will be compared with human tumors, including the analysis of cellular and molecular responses to genetic perturbations or to targeted therapeutics. This depth characterization of the above mentioned models will allow evaluation of their predictivity.

The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for project planning, design and set ‐up of experiments, analysis and reporting and actively participating in PREDECT meetings in close collaboration with the principal investigators and consortium collaborators.

Applicant qualifications:

A PhD in the field of Bioengineering/Biotechnology applied to Cancer/Cell Biology and a demonstrated track record of innovative scientific publications. Expertise in 3D culture systems and in vitro cancer models; expertise in in vivo cancer models as well as knowledge of cellular signaling pathways will be valued. Good communication skills, excellent command of spoken and written English and ability to integrate multidisciplinary environments are key requirements.

Terms of employment:

Initial contract for one year with the possibility of an extension up to 3 years.

Research Site:

The research work will be mainly performed at IBET ‐ Animal Cell Technology Unit, Oeiras, Portugal. The post ‐doc will spent 2 months per year at Abbvie site in Chicago, USA.
