Bayer Schering Pharma AG and IBET collaborate on a new research project

Lisbon, February, 2010 - Bayer Schering Pharma AG, Germany and iBET worked successfully in the past in the field of purification, crystallization and structural analysis of proteins and therefore intend to continue this partnership. A Satellite Laboratory of Bayer Schering Pharma is installed in iBET since day 1 July 2009. The initial purpose of this research partnership is the research and production of therapeutic antibodies from libraries of antibodies displayed on phage against the targets provided by Bayer Schering Pharma to iBET. Four Portuguese investigators will devote 3 years to this project.

About the presentation on phage (phage display)

The presentation in phage is one of the most recognizable production techniques of molecules in drug discovery. This is a progressive method of production of antibodies and antibody libraries displayed on phage is a rich and diverse source of antibodies, providing hundreds of specific antibodies per target. In addition to encouraging the identification of antibodies very quickly in a short time, enabling a comprehensive analysis of proteins in the phage display has been used to identify human antibody therapeutics, currently in review process for regulatory approval.

About iBET

The iBET is a private nonprofit institute that transfers for Knowledge in research to the companies. Occupies one quarter of the ITQB building of 18 000 m2 including 14 laboratories 75m2, 2 BL2 laboratories and a pilot area of 2 000m2 for bio-pharmaceutical processes of fermentation, extraction and purification. The Animal Cell Technology team has developed vaccines, recombinant proteins for therapeutic solutions and cell therapy and gene.
