Portuguese Magazine Pontos de Vista interviewed Paula Alves, iBET CEO, to know more about iBET’s R&D activities in biotechnology. The interview focused in understanding iBET’s role bridging academia and industry in Portugal and internationally since its creation, 30 years ago, and its strategy to becoming an international institute of reference in biotechnology.
Paula discussed iBET’s commitment to consolidate its position as an internationally recognised institution in the field of biopharmaceuticals by constantly nurturing partnerships allowing to explore new scientific advances while also attracting more investment.
A good example highlighted in the interview is the long-term partnership with Merck Kgaa which resulted in the installation of a satellite lab and dedicated team at iBET fully focused on the development of biochemical assays and study of molecular interactions for discovery of new drug targets.
Paula Alves also highlights the importance of investing on people, multidisciplinary teams and new areas, including computational biology and data science, as a pre-requisite for success and developing further the biotech hub in the Lisbon area.
