Teresa Serra is senior scientist at iBET since 2015 and Auxiliary Investigator since 2019 (FCT-EEC awarded).
She holds a PhD in Engineering Sciences and Technology (2010), New University of Lisbon, Portugal.
Her work aims to understand the bioactive effect of natural compounds and to create value from by-products from the food industry through the extraction of added-value compounds, using green technologies. She has been integrating chemical assays and omics tools with advanced cell models and human intervention trials, to understand the health benefits of bioactive compounds, natural extracts and food products.
She has received 3 competitive grants as PI and participated in over 20 competitive research projects and several research services with the food industry. She has published 43 peer-reviewed papers and 6 book chapters (1119 citations; h-index 19), delivered 20 invited talks and supervised 10 master students and 2 post-docs. She received 3 prizes (Nutrition Awards 2011&2012 and Aveleda Award 2013).
