Head of Microbiology and Molecular Biology Area / Microbiology and Molecular Biology

Biography

I am Head of the Microbiology for Sustainability Lab at iBET’s Biosustainability division, where I been working for more than 30 years.

Therefore, I have an extensive track record in project proposal, coordination, and participation both in national and international projects, as well as in supervising Master and PhD students and publication of scientific manuscripts.

My research areas are microbiology and molecular biology, in particular microbial characterization and ecology of microbial populations, with focus on antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity/virulence mechanisms of bacteria. The targets of the research have been microbial challenges related to food and water quality and safety, studies of traditional food fermented products and environment. I have expertise in microbial phenotypic characterization, PCR based methodologies, microscopy technics, and NGS (next generation sequencing).

I am a biologist from Faculdade de Ciências from Universidade de Lisboa and hold a PhD in Biological Engineering from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Due to my knowledge in Quality Management Systems, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP from OCDE) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), my past professional experience includes roles as Director of ASU (iBET’s Analytical Services Unit) (2008-2015) and Quality Assurance Manager at iBET and (2015-2022).
