Short Biography

I am the Head of the Merck Healthcare Satellite Lab at iBET, where I have been working since 2005. In this role, I have gained experience in managing pre-clinical drug discovery projects in an international setting.

My research area is Structure-based Drug Design, encompassing everything from gene expression to structure determination. Passionate about protein biochemistry and biophysics, my work integrates fields such as crystal-grade protein production, X-ray crystallography, surface plasmon resonance, biochemical assay development, and HDX-MS to create a comprehensive structure-based drug discovery platform.

Additionally, I study human AAA+ ATPases, named RuvBLs, which are involved in RNA processing, chromatin remodelling, chaperoning, and DNA damage repair. These proteins are relevant drug targets as they are overexpressed in various cancers.

I also teach in several PhD and Master´s programs. I hold a MSc in Applied Chemistry from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal (2000) and a PhD in Biochemistry from Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (2005). My past professional experience includes roles as an Auxiliary Professor at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias in Lisbon ((2003-2005), and Auxiliary Researcher (Ciência 2007 program) at iBET (2008-2013).

Highlights: (i) 49 published papers; 1 book chapters; (ii) supervision of 7 PhD students (3 concluded), 4 Master students (4 concluded); (iii) Over 10 oral communications (6 as invited speaker) and 60 poster communications; (iv) Principal Investigator of 3 Research Grants funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia; (v) Ciência 2007 Auxiliary Researcher; (vi) Pfizer Award for Basic Sciences (2012).
