iBET at PEACe 2025 Conference: Protein Expression in Animal Cells
Advancing Continuous Biomanufacturing and Vaccine Development
The 17th Conference on Protein Expression in Animal Cells (PEACe 2025), held on September 14–18 in Montreal, Canada, brought together leading academic and industry scientists to exchange the latest knowledge on recombinant protein expression in animal cells.
iBET contributed to the scientific program with two oral presentations by scientists from the Cell-based Vaccines Development Lab.
António Roldão (Head of the Lab and coordinator of the Late-Stage R&D Unit) presented “Enabling Continuous Biomanufacturing for Virus-Based Expression Systems via Multi-Stage Bioreactors” (first author: Ricardo Correia). The presentation highlighted an intensified bioprocess for the continuous manufacturing of influenza virus-like particles using the insect cell-baculovirus expression vector system, a work developed in collaboration with the Laboratory of Virology – Wageningen University & Research.
Margarida Rodrigues (Scientist) shared part of her PhD research on “Engineering Ferritin Nanoparticles for Precise Antigen Display”. This work was performed in collaboration with Columbia University Irving Medical Center and opens new avenues for vaccine design.

These contributions reflect iBET’s continued dedication to advancing vaccine development, bioprocess intensification, and continuous bioprocess strategies.
Scientific papers were published in the context of this work on Continuous manufacturing of VLPs using Multi Stage Bioreactors (see here) and Engineering Ferritin Nanoparticles (here and here).
