iBET and ITQB collaborate in “Contagio” movie disclosure
October 18, 2011
iBET and ITQB researchers joined ColumbiaTristar Pictures in the adverstisement of Steven Soderbergh latest movie: "Contagion” and brought to live a living panel of microorganisms, spelling the word "Contagio” escorted by biological hazard symbols.
Patricia Noronha ITQB resident artist produced this biopainting. Two big dimension panels were built (1,80cmx60cm) carrying 30L medium each. The pieces were created by inoculating, or better said, painting with harmless mold and yeast species: Penicillium chrysogenu (common mold) Penicillium roqueforti (Roquefort cheese mold), Penicillium camemberti (Camembert cheese mold) and Rhodosporidium toruloides (red yeast).
In Lisbon, Cais do Sodré metro station the public can check one panel, while at iBET/ITQB we have the "twin” panel on streaming that can be watched at: https://www.itqb.unl.pt/science-and-society/contagio/
This work results from the joint work and effort of the artist Patricia Noronha, of scientific background in microbiology and FCT post-doc fellow in artistic studies, along with the researchers Teresa Crespo and Vitória San Romão from the microbiology laboratory at iBET/ITQB, as well as, the team work from the maintenance, informatics and culture medium room support staff of ITQB.
