iBET F&H division attended the 4th Food Bioactives & Health International Conference

A delegation of researchers from iBET’s Natural Bioactives & Nutraceuticals Area, led by Teresa Serra, participated in the 4th Food Bioactives & Health International Conference, held in Prague, Czech Republic from 18th-21st September.
The iBET team showcased their expertise with 1 oral presentation and 5 poster presentations, two of which were selected for oral flash presentations.
Melanie Matos, PhD student, presented her latest results with an oral presentation entitled “Anti-inflammatory potential of a supercritical fluid extract from chicory on the intestinal mucosa: implications of gut microbiota metabolization”.
In addition, Ana Catarina Macedo and Leonor Costa, also PhD students from the same area presented 2 oral flash presentations, entitled:
• “Exploring the potential of hydroxytyrosol as an adjuvant agent in colorectal cancer treatment: effects of its combination with chemotherapy drugs on lovo spheroids” by Ana Catarina Macedo
• “Phytochemical characterization and volatile composition of 38 saffron (crocus sativus l.) stigmas produced in algeria: identification of compounds with antioxidant effect” by Leonor Costa - 2nd place prize for “Best Flash Presentation”.

FBHC is a well-established international forum dedicated to presenting the latest research and development in the field of food bioactives and other beneficial food constituents, as well as food contaminants and toxins. This year’s edition placed particular emphasis on the development of functional foods and food supplements, nutrition policy, personalized nutrition, and bioavailability, absorption, and metabolism of food constituents and their interaction with gut microbiota.

The work showcased at FBCH 2023 received the funding support via the VIIAFOOD agenda, VOOmics (internal funding) and SAFROMFOOD projects.
