1st International Meeting on Deep Eutectic Systems

Ana Matias, senior scientist and group leader at iBET integrated the organizing committee and Naiara Fernández and Liliana Rodrigues, integrated the host committee of the 1st International Meeting on Deep Eutectic Systems.

iBET sponsored the 1st International meeting on Deep Eutectic Systems, held in Lisbon between the 24th and 27th of June. During 4 immersive days, scientists, students and industrial partners discussed the state of the art and emerging findings from the use of deep eutectic systems. In the meeting, iBET’s PhD students Liliana Rodrigues and Maha Abdallah presented their research in which the extraordinary properties of deep eutectic systems are used to extract high added value compounds such as proteins and biopolymers from marine waste streams (sardine, codfish, tuna etc.). In addition, several other scientists from iBET Nutraceuticals and Bioactive Processes Technology group also attended the meeting.

Main topics of discussion included fundamental chemistry, energy and electrochemistry, extraction and separation, materials and biotechnology. Plenary lectures, oral communications and poster sessions covered most innovative scientific developments of this emerging area. iBET scientist Ana Matias chaired the session dedicated to discussing “extraction and separation methods”.
