Portuguese AGRO-TECH Campus is born in Oeiras

Three institutions in agri-food, veterinary and forestry sectors, come together in AgroTech Oeiras Campus. Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (iBET), Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) andInstituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV) have united in the first research and innovation ecosystem devoted to agri-food, veterinary and forestry – from the bench to the fields.
The consortium is the largest in the country of its kind, and includes over 1.000 researchers. It will promote research and experimental development of agriculture and forestry, animal health and plant sanity and technology and inovation for bioeconomy. It will also support advanced and specialized training of researchers and technicians, namely in agro biotechnology, agro industry and forestry.

“This consortium should stimulate research and tecnology for the industries in agrofood, veterinary and forestry. iBET has been working in that field for over 25 years, and has been an interface between national and international companies”, says Manuel Carrondo, Vice-President of IBET.
“ITQB NOVA represents Universidade Nova de Lisboa in this consortium. Although each institution has its specificities, we have common interests and geographic proximity and it was natural to become an AgroTech Campus together. ITQB NOVA is the partner leading in advanced training with 40 new PhD's every year. We have several master and PhD programs, levered on top notch research, contributing to creating knowledge and training specialized human resources”, says Cláudio M. Soares, Dean of ITQB NOVA.
“AGRO-TECH Campus de Oeiras is strongly oriented to portuguese companies, in particular those that are techology based and focused on exporting. It will also be an attractive ecosystem for multinational companies”, ends Nuno Canada, President of INIAV.AGRO-TECH Campus is the only of its kind in Portugal, with several National Reference Laboratories, focusing on fundamental and applied research. The Campus is based in Oeiras, where ITQB NOVA, INIAV and iBET have been doing excellent international research for many years.
