Inês Leonardo wins “Best Poster Communication Award” at Microbiotec’21

Inês Leonardo, PhD student at Food Safety and Microbiology Lab (Food & Health Division, iBET), received the “Best Poster Communication Award” (ex aequo) at the MICROBIOTEC’21 Webconference.

The awarded work, entitled “Bacterial food spoilage events: the first complete genome sequence of the off-flavour producer Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris DSM 3922T describes the combined use of short and long reads obtained from Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms, respectively, to assemble the complete genome of the type strain A. acidoterrestris DSM 3922T. This approach enabled the detection of one chromosome and two plasmids from the target genome, representing the first reference for further comparative and functional genomic studies on a taint producing Alicyclobacillus species.

NOVA University of Lisbon hosted MICROBIOTEC’21 conference on 23-26 November 2021, this year in webconference format due to COVID-19-related restrictions. Microbiotec is co-organized by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology and the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology and happens as a biannual event since 2005. The programme included sessions on five main topics: (1) Microbiotech in Health & Disease, (2) Microbiotech for a Sustainable Future, (3) Food and Environmental Microbiotech, (4) Impact of Microbiotech in Society, and (5) Cool tools in Microbiotech.
