Margarida Serra is the Head of Stem Cell Bioengineering Laboratory from the Animal Cell Technology Unit at iBET.
Margarida Serra graduated in Biological Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, and holds a PhD in Engineering and Technology Sciences, Biomedical Engineering from Instituto de Tecnologia Química Biológica da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Her work aims to streamline the manufacturing of cell therapy products (CTP) with improved functionality, to support phase I/II clinical trials. Her research focuses the development of novel cell culturing strategies to excel growth and differentiation/maturation of human pluripotent and adult stem cell and applies robust multi-parametric techniques including proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and fluxomics to support bioprocess optimization and CTP assessment.
Dr. Serra authored 40 manuscripts, 2 book chapters receiving a total of 1161 citations (h-index 19). Dr. Serra was also responsible for the supervision of 5 post-docs, 8 PhD students (5 completed), 17 MSc students (13 completed), 3 research grants awarded by FCT and 1 EU-funded project (WP-leader) as well as several research services with the industry.
