Biography

I am the head of the Cell-based Vaccines Development Lab (since 2019) and Coordinator of Late-Stage R&D Bioproduction Unit (since 2021) at iBET. In this role, I coordinate and/or manage multiple national and EU funded projects as well as R&D service driven projects focused on vaccines and viral vectors production.

My current research is driven by the aim to develop novel complex biopharmaceuticals with impact in Human and Animal Health. The basis for my work lies on the use and integration of multidisciplinary technologies such as synthetic biology, evolutionary and bioprocess engineering, and bottom-up systems biology to fasten the generation of the products I’m interested in, particularly virus-like particles as vaccine candidates and viral vectors for gene therapy.

I mentor and supervise PhD and MSc research students; I also coordinate and lecture in PhD and MSc’s courses in Portugal and abroad (e.g. “Vaccinology and Drug Development” MSc Program from University of Siena, Italy). In addition, I act as co-chair of international conferences (e.g. ISBioTech Meeting, USA), and I’m currently a member of ESACT XC (since 2022).

I hold an BSc in Chemical Engineering from FCT-UNL in Portugal, and a PhD in Engineering and Technology Sciences, Systems Biology from ITQB NOVA in Portugal. My past professional experience includes roles as senior researcher and director of fermentation technology in the Systems and Synthetic Biology Lab at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (2010-2014), “Investigador FCT” (2014-2020) and Senior Scientist in the Engineering Cellular Applications Lab (2014-2019) at iBET, Portugal.
