Catarina Malta

Scientist / Protein Biophysics for Drug Discovery

Short Biography

I am a Scientist at the Merck Healthcare Satellite Lab, where I have been working since June 2018. My research area focuses on characterizing molecular interactions between small molecules or antibodies with selected drug targets using advanced biophysical tools, such as hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS).

As part of my work with HDX-MS—a relatively recent technique—I optimized experimental workflows to study protein–ligand interactions. In particular, this work expanded the application of HDX-MS to fragment-based drug discovery, pushing the limits of this technique to study protein–fragment interactions.

I hold a PhD in Molecular Biosciences, with a specialization in Biochemistry, from ITQB NOVA in Lisbon; an MSc in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro in collaboration with the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute in Barcelona; and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro.
