Biography
Gabriela Silva is a Senior Scientist of the Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica since 2014.
She holds a Master degree from the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia, and obtained her PhD in Biology with the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Nova Lisbon University, Portugal. During her PhD, she contributed to the characterization of metalloproteins from the anaerobic bacterium Desulfovibrio gigas and understanding how this bacterium copes with oxygen.
From 2002 to 2014, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher and scientist in the fields of inflammation at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC, Oeiras, Portugal) and cancer (solid and hematologic malignancies), first at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (Lisbon, Portugal) and later at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (Riyadh, KSA).
She joined iBET in 2014. Herein, she supported the development of therapeutic antibodies, recombinant proteins, modified immune cells, molecular and cell-based assays. She has also advanced understanding of the role of the Notch ligand DLL1 in breast cancer tumorigenesis. Her current research focuses on cellular and immune mechanisms influencing rAAV transduction, toxicity, and intracellular trafficking, as well as on the development of improved AAV capsid variants.
The results of her research were published in peer-reviewed international journals and presented at scientific conferences (more than 2000 citations).
