Gonçalo Covas

I am an Analytical Research Associate at the Analytical Services Unit of iBET since June 2023. I am responsible for designing, executing and reviewing analytical assays in a regulated environment (Good Manufacturing Practices) in a timely manner. My main area of expertise is developing and qualifying chromatography methods for biopharmaceuticals. 

I hold a M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade Lisboa (2011) and a Ph.D. in Molecular BioSciences from ITQB NOVA – Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (2020). My Ph.D. thesis focused on using Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis as bacterial models to: (I) unveil how Drosophila melanogaster peptidoglycan recognition proteins discriminate bacteria with different degrees of peptidoglycan concealment within the assembled bacterial cell wall and, (II) reveal bacterial mechanisms that can impair peptidoglycan recognition by host receptors.
