Best Poster Award at International Conference on Polyphenols and Health
Best Poster Award: Virgin Olive Oil Phenolic Compounds as co-Adjuvants in Cancer Treatment
Scientists from iBET’s Sustainability for Food & Health division recently participated in the 11th International Conference on Polyphenols and Health (ICPH) 2024, held in Boston, USA, from October 16-19.
First Human Intervention Study with Bravo de Esmolfe Apple
Teresa Serra, Head of our Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Lab, presented the latest findings from an ongoing human intervention study titled: “Does an apple a day keeps the doctor away? The first human intervention study with Bravo de Esmolfe apple variety to evaluate its protective role towards cardiovascular diseases”.
Funded by iBET’s internal innovation program, iBETXplore, this study involves 26 hypercholesterolemic participants who are consuming Bravo de Esmolfe apple puree over an 8-week period. The research project aims to assess the impact of the regular consumption of this apple variety on the participant’s blood lipid profiles and overall cardiovascular health.
Best Poster Award: Olive Oil Phenolic Compounds in Cancer Treatment
Additionally, PhD student Ana Catarina Macedo from the same laboratory, won the Best Poster Award for her work on the potential role of phenolic compounds from virgin olive oil as co-adjuvant agents in colorectal cancer treatment.
Her poster presentation, titled “Can Phenolic Compounds Of Virgin Olive Oil Act As Promising Co-Adjuvant Agents In Colorectal Cancer? An Investigation Using A 3D Cell Model Approach”, presented findings from the VOOmics project (funded by FCT), as well as work linked to the VIIAFOOD agenda (supported by PRR). This project was developed in collaboration with Sovena and IPOLFG.
The ICPH is a leading international forum in the field of polyphenols and health, held every two years to showcase cutting-edge research and foster scientific collaboration.
The recognition of iBET researchers at ICPH2024 highlights the institute’s growing expertise in the study of natural bioactive compounds and their role in the promotion of health.
