iBET Researchers Present Advances in Supercritical Fluids Technologies at EMSF 2026
Highlighting innovative and sustainable bioprocesses for the recovery of high-value compounds and the valorization of agro-industrial by-products
Scientists from iBET’s Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Area participated in the European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF) 2026, held in Clausthal, Germany, from 14 – 17 June.
The team presented innovative work on the use of supercritical and subcritical fluid technologies for the recovery of high-value compounds from natural resources and agro-industrial by-products.
iBET contributed to the scientific program with 2 oral presentations:
–Naiara Fernández presented “Ergosterol-rich mushroom extracts: Supercritical CO₂ and pre-treatment synergies”, exploring how the combination of supercritical CO2 extraction with tailored pre-treatments can enhance the recovery of ergosterol, a valuable bioactive compound found in mushrooms.
–Cátia Carmo presented “Recovery of bioactive peptides from olive pomace by subcritical water hydrolysis”, demonstrating the potential of subcritical water hydrolysis to valorize olive pomace, an agro-industrial by-product, into a source of bioactive peptides for nutritional and cosmetic applications.

In addition to the oral presentations, iBET also contributed with 2 posters:
–Rita Falcão (presented by Cátia Carmo) – “Deodorization of Lablab bean (Lablab purpureus) using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction”, showcased a sustainable approach to improving the sensory characteristics of Lablab bean, an alternative protein source.
–João Baixinho (presented by Naiara Fernández) –“Valorization of winery by-products: vine pruning leaves as a potential source of novel phytosanitary ingredients”, highlighting the valorization of vineyard residues through the recovery of compounds with potential agricultural applications.
