iBET’s Science at International Ultraviolet Association World Congress

Leveraging UV Light for Disinfection of Water, Surfaces and Fresh Products

Four iBET scientists presented their research at the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) World Congress, held in Lisbon from 7-10 September 2025.

The conference brought together experts from around the world to explore the latest advancements in UV technology and its application to pressing environmental, health, and process treatment challenges.

iBET’s contributions included included three oral presentations from Membrane Processes Lab scientists:

  • João Sério (PhD student): “Wavelength Sonata: Orchestrating UVC Light for Effective Bacterial Inactivation”,
  • Carolina Santos (PhD student): “Radiant Solutions: Battling Nosocomial Infections and Antibiotic Resistance with UV Light Emitting Diodes”,
  • Nicole Ferreira (Research Fellow): “Pilot Scale Disinfection of Water and Fresh Products Using Light Emitting Diodes“.

One poster was also presented, summarizing part of the PhD work of Inês Leonardo (Microbiology and Molecular Biology Lab): “Early Intervention Strategies for Microbial Spoilage Control: A study on Alicyclobacillus Acidoterrestris Inactivation using Peracetic Acid and UV-C LEDs

iBET’s participation highlighted ongoing efforts to advance UV-based solutions for safer water, surfaces, and improved food safety.
