DDBP2024: iBET’s Research at International Water Disinfection Conference

2nd Place Best Poster Award and Two Oral Presentations

A team of iBET scientists recently participated in the 4th International Conference on Disinfection and Disinfection By-Products (DDBP 2024), held in Almería, Spain, from October 21st to 24th.

Organized by the International Water Association (IWA) Disinfection Specialist Group, DDBP is a leading international conference that gathers experts from academia, industry, water utilities, and policy sectors to discuss advancements in water disinfection and disinfection by-products.

iBET’s presence at the conference was marked by several impactful contributions, including the participation of Vanessa Pereira as session chair, and two oral communications:

  • João Sério – “Understanding the mechanisms of inactivation of ultraviolet light emitting diodes to develop effective water disinfection systems”
  • Vanessa Pereira – “Treatment of wastewater effluents using nanofiltration and low pressure UV treatment to produce high quality water that can be reused for irrigation for food production”

In addition to these sessions, three posters further highlighted iBET’s work, with a special recognition going to Carolina Santos who won the 2nd Place Best Poster award:

  • Vanessa Pereira – “Disinfection of lettuce using light emitting diodes”
  • Nicole Ferreira – “Disinfection of irrigation water using ultraviolet light emitting diodes”
  • Carolina Santos – “Explore light emitting diodes for disinfection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water and food surfaces” (2nd Place Best Poster award)

The research presented at DDBP2024 is part of several iBET projects focused on the sustainable treatment and disinfection of water and surfaces. These include the LEDeffect, SAFEFOOD and AgriWWater projects, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, and the FOODLED project funded by iBET’s internal innovation program – iBETXplore.

DDBP 2024 provided an important platform for iBET scientists to engage with global experts and contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for water treatment and reuse.
