Professor Manuel Carrondo distinguished with Medal of Scientific Merit by FCT

Prestigious Award Recognizing Significant Contributions to Science in Portugal

iBET proudly announces that Manuel Carrondo, iBET’s Founder and current Vice-President and Professor at NOVA University of Lisbon, has been awarded the Medal of Scientific Merit by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

This prestigious medal honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science or scientific culture in Portugal, through their professional achievements and sense of duty.

Advancing Animal Cell Technology R&D in Portugal

Manuel Carrondo, Full Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at NOVA University of Lisbon (retired), was recognized for his outstanding scientific career in animal cell technology and his tireless efforts to advance the field in Portugal.

His pioneering work led to the founding of iBET in 1989 and GeniBET in 2006, a spin-off dedicated to producing proteins, cells, and viruses for phase I/II clinical trials.

In 2021, he was also distinguished with the Cell Culture Engineering Award by Engineering Conferences International (ECI).

Award Ceremony at Encontro Ciência 2024

The 2024 awardees were announced during Encontro Ciência 2024, Portugal’s largest event dedicated to science and technology, held in Porto from July 3-5.

The medal was presented by FCT’s President and Vice-president, Madalena Alves and Francisco Santos, and was received on Professor Carrondo’s behalf by Professor Isabel Rocha (Vice-rector at NOVA University of Lisbon).

Among the distinguished 2024 awardees are Catarina Resende de Oliveira (Univ. of Coimbra); Elvira Fortunato (NOVA Univ. Lisbon); João Rocha (University of Cambridge); José Tribolet (IST); Maria Manuel Mota (IGC); Mónica Bettencourt-Dias (IGC) and António Damásio (University Southern California).
