FBHC2025: iBET’s Research at International Food Bioactives & Health Conference
Showcasing Translational Research for Better Nutrition and Health
Two scientists from iBET’s Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Lab presented their work at the 5th International Conference on Food Bioactives and Health, held in Marseille, France, from 3-5 June 2025.
The conference focused on various aspects of the impact of food bioactives on human health, including accessing their bioaccessibility, bioavailability, metabolism, and health effects.

Highlights included 2 keynote talks on the “Phenolic Compound and Cardiovascular health” and “Phenolic compounds & Health” sessions:
Teresa Serra (Head of the Head of Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals Lab) delivered a talk entitled: “Does a bravo de esmolfe apple puree a day keep the doctor away? — Results from the first human intervention study with a traditional portuguese apple variety in hypercholesterolemic volunteers”.
Ana Macedo (PhD student) shared her work on: “Virgin olive oil polyphenol as potential therapeutic agent in colorectal cancer: targeting cancer stem cells in 3d spheroid models”.
4 posters were also presented by Teresa and Ana on: Safron Flowers as source of natural bioactives and colorant ingredients (first author Leonor Costa); Halophyte plant potential for cosmetic formulations (first author Juliana Oliveira); and Antiproliferative effects of phytocannabinoids in colorectal cancer cells (first author Martim Cardeira); and Bioactive potential of extracts from olive oil by-products ( co-authored by the partners of HydroX project – Sovena Group, Perfinox and FFUL – gathering findings from the VIIAFOOD Agenda, funded by PRR)
Special congratulations to Martim Cardeira (first author) and Ana Macedo (presenter), for winning 3rd Best Poster Award!
These contributions reflect iBET’s commitment on valorizing bioactives in food products for health-promoting effects.
