PhD Students from European Doctoral Network ORGESTRA Engage in Research & Transferable Skills Training at iBET
Advancing Organoid Technologies Through Joint Doctoral Training
On October 16-17, iBET welcomed a group of PhD students from the EU-funded MSCA ORGESTRA Joint Doctoral Network for a two-day workshop combining advanced research topics and transferable skills.
These students, currently pursuing their doctorates across multiple European universities and ORGESTRA partner institutions, explored key research topics including:
- Advanced 3D Cell Models for disease modelling
- Omics technologies for product and process understanding
- Bioreactors and Bioprocesses for stem cells and organoids
- 3D cell culturing and bioreactor technology
This first day was led by Dr. Margarida Serra (Head of iBET’s Stem and Immune Cells Bioengineering Lab), alongside iBET researchers Dr. Giacomo Domenici, Dr. Inês Isidro, and PhD students Ana Meliciano and João Jacinto.
Day two featured sessions on confidentiality and intellectual property management, academic entrepreneurship, business plan development, and quality assurance, guided by Dr. Ritchie Head (CERAT) and Dr. Jenny van der Wijst (MERCURNA).

A special thank you to Margarida Serra and the iBET team for organizing this valuable workshop, and to all the lecturers and participants for their enthusiasm and engagement.
About ORGESTRA:
ORGESTRA is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Joint Doctorate Network training 13 PhD candidates to tackle critical challenges in organoid technologies for disease modelling, drug discovery, and rare disease research. This ambitious joint-PhD program provides interdisciplinary and international training across 14 partners in 7 European countries.
iBET is a host institution for one of the doctoral projects focused on “Upscaling and standardizing organoid culturing”. The research is being conducted at iBET’s Stem and Immune Cells Bioengineering Lab, under the supervision of Margarida Serra.
Through our involvement in Doctoral Programs and European Networks, iBET helps shape the next generation of scientists tackling global health and biotech challenges.
