Latest Advancements in Bioanalytics and rAAV Production Presented at BioProcess International Europe 2025
Advanced Bioanalytics to Characterize Complex Biologics & Scalable Bioprocess for rAAV Production
iBET scientists José Escandell and Sofia Carvalho attended the BioProcess International (BPI) Europe Conference, held in Hamburg, Germany from 12th to 15th of May.

This event brings together key players of Biopharma and Biotech, with this year’s program emphasizing Cell Line Development, Cell Culture, Cell and Gene Therapy, Downstream Processing, and Manufacturing Digitalization.
iBET contributed to the scientific program with two oral presentations:
Oral Presentation – “Advanced Bioanalytics for Comprehensive Characterization of Biotherapeutics Manufacturing”
Sofia Carvalho addressed key challenges in the characterization of complex biologics, presenting an mass spectrometry (MS)-based Multiple Attribute Method (MAM) strategy for assessing post-translational modifications (PTMs) of mAbs and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). She also discussed the use of a SWATH-MS approach for targeted host cell protein (HCP) profiling.
These bioanalytical tools were applied to characterize a DSP polishing platform, enabling the identification of the best design space and maximize product quality and purification performance.
Oral Presentation – “Towards a Scalable Bioprocess for rAAV Production Using a Stable Cell Line System”
José Escandell presented advancements in the improvement of stable cell-line based production systems for recombinant AAV (rAAV) manufacturing. His talk focused on enhancing the host cell performance using CRISPR-Cas9 genetic screening and single cell RNA-sequencing approaches.
