Advancing Biomaterials Engineering: iBET Welcomes Seminar by Dr. Miguel Castilho

Engineering Biomaterials to Control the Cellular (Micro)environment

On May 15, iBET welcomed Dr. Miguel Castilho, Associate Professor of Biomaterials Engineering and Biofabrication at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, for an iNOVA4Health seminar.

During his presentation, Dr. Castilho explored how distinct tissue mechanical functions, such as contractibility in cardiac muscle or load bearing in articular cartilage, can be restored using high-resolution biomaterial systems and 3D biomanufacturing strategies.

He also highlighted how increasingly complex light-sheet-based volumetric 3D bioprinting strategies for engineering cell-laden biomaterial systems, can enable spatial and on-demand control over mechanical properties and geometric changes.

These advances open new perspectives for the precise control of cell and organoid fate, as well as for studying cell-matrix (mechanical) interactions, ultimately enabling function tissue regeneration.

Dr. Castilho leads a multidisciplinary research team focused on biomaterials engineering and biofabrication, with applications in in vitro human disease models and in situ tissue regeneration. His contributions to the field have been recognized with multiple international awards.

iBET’s Stem and Immune Cells Bioengineering Lab and Dr. Castilho’s team previously collaborated within the EU-funded BRAV3 project, which aimed to develop a personalized biological ventricular assist device (BioVAD).

iBET warmly thanks Dr. Castilho for the insightful seminar and looks forward to continuing this collaboration in future joint projects.
