iBET Hosts iNOVA4Health Insightful Seminars on Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Processes by Dr. Lee and Dr. Lakshmanan

“Self-driving Bioprocess Digital Twins for Next-generation Biomanufacturing” and “Systematizing Animal Cell-based Biomanufacturing”

On October 17th, iBET had the pleasure of welcoming two seminars as part of the iNOVA4Health Research Unit, featuring Dr. Dong-Yup Lee and Dr. Meiyappan Lakshmanan.

Dr. Dong-Yup Lee is a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Director of White Bioinnovation Research Center in South Korea. Dr. Meiyappan Lakshmanan is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Technology Madras, India, and a Visiting Researcher at the Bioprocessing Technology Institute, A*STAR, Singapore.

“Self-driving Bioprocess Digital Twins for Next-generation Biomanufacturing”

Dr. Lee opened the session with a presentation on a cutting-edge framework for bioprocess digital twins. His approach integrates genome-scale metabolic models of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells with real-time sensing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to simulate and optimize biomanufacturing processes. By combining physical and virtual layers, his work enables predictive control over cell growth, productivity, and product quality.

Dr. Lee is internationally recognized for his expertise in multi-omics integration, mammalian systems biotechnology, and model-guided metabolic engineering, with over 170 scientific publications and extensive industrial collaborations.

“Systematizing Animal Cell-based Biomanufacturing”

Dr. Lakshmanan followed with a seminar on data-driven strategies to improve animal cell-based biotherapeutic manufacturing. His team has developed the largest CHO multi-omics compendium and applies computational modeling to guide cell line engineering and media optimization. His research uses genome-scale models and machine learning to enhance biologic yields and stability, while also exploring regulatory elements for consistent transgene expression.

Dr. Lakshmanan specializes in systems biology, cellular metabolism, and rational bioprocess design, with applications in biopharma process characterization and development, cell culture media and rational cell line development for biotherapeutics production.

iBET extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Dong-Yup Lee and Dr. Meiyappan Lakshmanan for their visit and for delivering such inspiring and forward-looking presentations.
