“Fascinated by Science, Driven by the Future” – Prof. Paula Alves Interviewed by Valor Magazine

CEO Prof. Paula Alves was recently featured in Valor Magazine’s special issue on female leadership

Paula Alves, CEO of iBET and Professor at ITQB NOVA, was interview by Valor Magazine for its special issue on “Women of Value: Success Stories”, which celebrates inspiring female leaders across various sectors. In this feature, Prof. Paula Alves shared her passion for science, her professional journey, and leadership vision for the future of iBET.

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the natural sciences”, Paula Alves recalls. Her academic training began with a degree in Biochemistry at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), followed by a PhD in Biochemical Engineering at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA).

Her international experience in Norway, Germany, and the UK helped her acquire skills in areas that were still emerging in Portugal.

“Since then, I have dedicated myself to research and development of bioprocesses for the production of biologics (antibodies and vaccines) and gene and cell therapies”.

Paula also highlights the fundamental role of women in science. “Portugal is a good example of gender balance and recognition of female scientists, I recommend visiting the exhibition Mulheres na Ciência at Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon, that unveils these women’s inspirations and contribution.” states Paula, “Several Portuguese and international R&D institutions are currently led by women”.

As iBET’s CEO for nearly 14 years, Paula emphasizes the importance of a shared mission, and how a leader must inspire and guide people so they know their work has real impact and contributes to improving health and wellbeing.

Reflecting on her career, Paula describes it as deeply positive and enriching, marked by continuous learning and the privilege of working alongside inspiring people, such as mentors, students and colleagues.

“Contributing to a science with global impact is a great source of pride. I remain motivated to, together with every iBETian, build the future of this institution.”
