iBET Microbiology Researchers Participate in Outreach Event for International Microorganism Day 2025

Advancing Microbiology-based Solutions for Future Agro-industrial Challenges

On September 17, researchers from iBET’s Microbiology and Molecular Biology (MMB) Lab took part in a science outreach event to celebrate the International Microorganism Day.

Organized by ITQB NOVA with the support of Oeiras Municipality, the event was held at the beach in Santo Amaro, Oeiras, and aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of microorganisms and microbiology research.

iBET researchers hosted an interactive stand titled “Can Nature Protect Agriculture?”, where visitors engaged in several hands-on activities to explore how beneficial bacteria found in plants and soils can contribute to more resilient and sustainable agriculture by:

  • Suppressing harmful fungi and boosting plant defenses,
  • Producing bioactive compounds with potential for next-generation pesticides.

This research is part of TEC4GREEN, a PRR-funded consortium led by Ascenza Agro, comprising 18 national partners including iBET, that aims to prepare the agro-industrial sector for future technological and environmental challenges.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to share iBET’s MMB research with the local community and highlight the importance of microbiology in building a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future.
